An English magician performing under the name Dynamo has attracted the attention of illusionist Criss Angel. And not in the good way. Dynamo (born Steven Frayne) performs utilizing Criss Angel’s trademark look. If that were not bad enough . . . Dynamo is also performing Criss Angel’s signature illusions. On television.

The Union City, California-based American Licorice Co. has issued a voluntary recall of their Red Vines Black Licorice Twists product due to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) discovery of 0.33 parts per million of lead in the product. It has been reported that amount equals a whopping 13.2 micrograms of lead per serving . . . which is a level more than double the recommended amount deemed safe for children or women who are pregnant.

This Red Vines recall affects the 1 pound (16-ounce) bags of Red Vines Black Licorice Twists which carry the label “Best Before Date” of 020413. The “Best Before Date” can be found, in black ink, on the reverse of the product package. The California Department of Health has suggested that consumers of the product on recall should discard the black licorice, immediately. Pregnant women–as well as the parents of children–who have consumed the product are cautioned to consult with members of the medical community in order to arrange for any medical tests which might be necessary.

An interview with magician Nathan Burton

English: Las Vegas Strip

When John Sebastian–of The Lovin’ Spoonful’s fame–wrote Do You Believe in Magic in 1965, Sebastian must have had an inkling, somehow, about the future of Las Vegas magician Nathan Burton. Having the opportunity to sit down and talk with Nathan readily brings to mind Sebastian’s lyric:

And it’s magic, if the music is groovy it makes you feel happy like an old-time movie. I’ll tell you about the magic and it’ll free your soul . . . but it’s like tryin’ to tell a stranger ’bout rock and roll.

You have to meet Nathan Burton in order to understand what a nice, and genuinely caring, individual he is. Sitting down to interview him is a pleasure. He enjoys his work. That point is illustrated, very clearly, during his show. In speaking with him, however, one comes to see the person behind the persona – and that is where Burton shines.

The passing of a dear friend

One of the perks of writing for the Las Vegas Magic community, as I do, is that I get to create content which features the work of magicians that I admire (and have been fortunate enough to meet) – and that I am able to call more than a few of those magicians personal friends.

Recently I have discovered one of the drawbacks of writing for a community that I know, and love, so well. In the early morning hours of July 28th – I learned of the sudden and deeply unexpected passing of a dear friend. That friend was an active participant in the magic community – and I realized that I would have need to craft an article regarding the passing of a person that was dear to me.

My view was that I could no longer do anything for Bill in this life other than writing him the very best tribute that I could.

I hope that somehow–through my words–I have found a way to keep his memory bright and alive in the hearts of those that knew and adored him. It is also my hope that my words can serve as an introduction to the people reading that Bill never had the chance to meet.

It was with great sadness, and tremendous distress, that the Las Vegas magic community learned about the passing of one of their own during the early morning hours of July 28th. Las Vegas magician William (Bill) Robinson died unexpectedly from complications involving his heart.

The rest of Bill Robinson’s tribute (with photographs) can be found, HERE.

Rest in Peace, Bill.

You are well and truly missed.
